This beautiful soul is my eldest son, Michael Gregory Aquino. Mikey left his body 12 years ago today at age 49, and so I am celebrating his life and the wonderful being he was. I send loving energy to his two brothers, Tony and Matt, who love him deeply and keep him always in their hearts.

It was 1982, and as we drove onto the Ranch property, I felt a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I said to myself, “I have finally come home to be with my spiritual family.” I was then a disciple of the Indian spiritual Master, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, for four years, and I felt honored to be invited to live at Rajneeshpuram.

One of the first things I did was report to the work assignments Coordinator to receive my assignment. Because I had previously managed a medical practice, I was assigned to worship (work-LOL) in our medical clinic to assist the Coordinator there, a woman called Ma Anand Puja. Little did I know what I was in for!

At first, it was just a lot of work; 12-hour days, 7 days a week, was my schedule, as was everyone else’s in Rajneeshpuram. Then I realized my boss, Puja, was not a joyful or spiritual person and was, in fact, a devious tyrant who had ulterior motives for just about everything she did. Luckily, she initially liked me and trusted me to do my work. When I developed Rheumatoid Arthritis, she took good care of me medically and even allowed me time off to rest.

I later discovered she was part of the group of “Moms” that ran the Ranch who did nefarious acts to keep us going and had no spiritual leanings, just a lust for power. I made a joke once, and somehow, it made her think I knew more than I should, so she tried to get rid of me by sending me to get an AID’s test. At this time, people who tested positive for AIDS were confined to one dwelling with others who tested positive. When I went to the Clinic, my Lab Tech friend advised me not to take the test and to leave the clinic immediately. Thankfully, I listened to her and kept a low profile. Who knew my irreverent sense of humor could cause me such a serious problem?

I don’t have the time, space, or desire to reveal all that happened there over my four years. I also made several amazing friends, 3 of whom remain my very best friends to this day. We all worked at the Clinic, shared in the work, and saw the dysfunctional way it was run.

I also learned a lot about myself that I carry with me to this day. I went there doubting myself, critical of my actions, and never feeling like I was enough. The day I left, I was filled with sadness and regret that it didn’t turn out as I had hoped. But I also felt I was starting a new life with a new-found knowledge of my resilience, a massive dose of self-love, and a fresh start.

One of the things Bhagwan said has stuck with me, “Serious people are dead before their death.” I took away a belief in my sense of humor as having saved my life. I used to be very, very serious, and now I am very playful, irreverent, and a lot of fun to hang out with. And now, I accept myself as I am with all my imperfections…which are perfect. When something happens that seems to be a problem, I catch myself saying, “What’s a way around this?”

I have no regrets about his part of my past; it was a true blessing to be part of a loving spiritual community. I will never forget it!

Life is what I make it; miserable or joyful, full or empty, bored or involved, loving or spiteful are all my choices. There's no one to blame, no victims, no saviors, just being in this moment in totality.
